  • Purpose

The purpose of this site is:

    1. To make available my collection of pipe organ information.
    2. To bring the beauty of the Dutch, European (that sequence) and world wide pipe organs to the notice of visitors of this site. Internet sites about the most important organs and about large organs do exist, but it is amazing how many beautiful organs reside in all the villages.
    3. Since all Internet users have access to all this data now I invite you all to send me your corrections and/or additions. For this purpose I created buttons () that prepare a mail message. This will both improve the quality and the quantity of the data, I guess.

    History

The foundation for this site has been laid at the time I started to record data about pipe organs I visited, or wherever I found some information while reading about pipe organs, in a WordPerfect document. I kept doing that for some year, and that resulted in a huge amount of data.

    Technical evolution

After some time I converted the unstructured WordPerfect document into a DBase III database. From this database I was able to generate documents. This way I combined two subjects that kept my interest: pipe organs and computers. Later on I switched over to MSAccess. From there I generate the HTML files for this site. The reason for doing it like this is, that my computer resides behind a firewall; therefore it can not work as a site server.

    Future

This is site is a rather plain one. Recently I made some changes (e.g. I added maps for some countries). Some persons asked met to make for every organ builder a list of organs they worked on. Although it is really simple to query this from a database, I am not sure if I will do that. We will see. To work around this I added a search page where you can search for the name of an organ builder instead. This serves other purposes as well, hence I implemented this first.

Why this site is not multi-language enabled

This site is in Dutch only. Since it contains more than 2000 pages it is not possible for me to have them in English as well. I simply can not spend too much time on this. However I hope you will be able to get a clue what pipe organs are where. Besides that there are references to other site that might be in English. The main reason to have the pages in Dutch is that the major part of the pages is about Dutch organs (70%).
